Old Spice Commercial - Kinetic Type-ified
This was a project to transform a commercial of our choice, having been approved by our professor first, into a kinetic type commercial.
While my professor was originally concerned about my choice of an Old Spice commercial, she let me go along with it and, by her own account, was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.
I knew that it would be difficult with certain Old Spice commercials as the majority of them are very visual. So I found one with callbacks to previous commercials so it would be easier to visualize, along with the vectors I added.
The biggest struggle was obviously making sure everything was on-screen at the right times. Shifting through After Effects was my best friend so I could hear exactly when certain words or sounds started. Trying to figure out how I was going to visualize the shaking was also a feat, as I was still relatively new to After Effects and getting some of the transitions and movements to work the way I wanted was frustrating.
My favorite part was figuring out how to do the end of the commercial. I was extremely excited that the notorious Old Spice whistle matched up with how many letters are in the words "Old Spice." It was the most fun to figure out, even though it rendered slightly differently to what was originally projected.
In the end, I think it came out quite nicely and is actually the After Effects project of which I'm most proud. At my professor's request, it was shown at the Student Film Festival that semester.
